As a long standing resident of IW, I don't see a worth in it from my perspective, but as the founders pointed out, it's an ideal strategy to retain new visitors. It provides a limited and inexpensive way for someone to get their feet wet. Later, they may choose to either rent land from someone else at a more affordable price with more administrative privileges or even buy their own sim.

At a community meeting a few months ago, the founders said they were working on it. I haven't heard anything about it since.

If by sim on a stick you mean YOUR own grid space on your machine that can you can move freely between IW and SOS- then forget it- because that is essentially what the Hypergrid and OpenSim is. IW and SL and similar others are Walled Gardens- Nothing can travel freely between grids. It would defeat their security measures.

I think SOAS is standalone regions. With the new Halcyon software it seems as if they could offer that. You couldn't connect the region to the IW grid but possibly you could have a standalone region running on your computer with it.

I assume if IW does it that it would be Halcyon proprietary. Here is an OS version if anyone is interested, but it is standalone and not HG enabled. simonastick.com/

If memory serves me, the plan was to run a simulator on your own desktop, create within it, upload your builds after testing and have no surprises.
As it stands now, when you create on your stand alone, there are many tweaks required to get your build to work in IW as it did on your stand alone.
