From my experience - knowing someone who recently 'accidentally' bought a tablet and seeing them being pulled out of briefcases and handbags all the time - this article, if anything, underestimates the rapid decline of the kind of multi-purpose computers needed to currently enter into virtual worlds. Why Tablets are killing the PC & Laptop - Guardian onlineWhich makes me wonder if there can be a significant amount of new residents that don't already have VW experience - as they might see an ad or read an article, as many of us did, but soon they won''t have the necessary kit at home to give it a try. The future seems to be a family media centre, operated by each individual's tablet. Wondering if our current opensim technology can adapt and be compatible with that kind of control and viewing system?

Maybe the experiment that LL tried, with a guest log in via browser. This would allow the tablet user to gain access, even create an account if they chose to, but would be limited. Would allow a user time to decide if they wanted to invest in a machine that could run a viewer if they didn't already have one in the home yet.

By the time the shift that is predicted occurs (3-5 years) Tablets will be plenty powerful enough to run virtual worlds. Microsoft's new Surface 3 pro (Which will flop) has an intel HD4400 ......not a great video card but quite good enough to run IW right now . So move that out three years .......... where VR has to adapt is to the tablet interface .......... though bluetooth keyboards and such render even that point moot. Ultimately what will happen is people will be taking what we currently think of as the PC with them wherever they go and the peripherals.....when needed at all will adapt and be located where they are needed.
